Product Licensing Cluster

IBM SPSS Licensing.

SPSS is the IBM statistical analysis and predictive modelling family. SPSS Statistics is the desktop analytical product. SPSS Modeler is the data science workbench. Both are licensed by named user with a Server variant for shared deployment. This article is the buyer side reference.

The SPSS product family.

The SPSS family includes SPSS Statistics (the desktop and server statistical analysis product), SPSS Modeler (the visual data science workbench), and the SPSS Analytic Server (the distributed processing back end for Modeler against large datasets). Each is licensed independently. Each has a multi tier edition structure. The buyer side discipline is the same as Cognos: the named user inventory reconciliation. See Cognos licensing for the parallel reading.

1. SPSS Statistics editions.

SPSS Statistics is sold in tiered editions (Base, Standard, Professional, Premium). Each tier adds analytical modules (Advanced Statistics, Regression, Custom Tables, Forecasting, Decision Trees, Direct Marketing). The buyer side trap is the module entitlement reconciliation. A buyer with the Base edition that has installed the Advanced Statistics module is in the same edition gap pattern as Db2 Standard with Advanced features. The remediation is the annual module audit per installed copy. See Db2 licensing for the parallel pattern.

2. SPSS Modeler editions.

SPSS Modeler is sold in tiered editions (Professional, Premium, Gold). The differentiation is the included node set (Text Analytics nodes, Entity Analytics nodes, the R and Python integration). The buyer side trap is the same module gap pattern. The remediation is the annual node usage audit per Modeler installation.

3. The Server variants.

SPSS Statistics Server and SPSS Modeler Server are the shared deployment variants. The Server allows analysts to push the workload from the desktop to a shared compute tier. The Server is licensed by PVU on the server tier and the desktop client is licensed by Authorized User. A typical enterprise SPSS deployment runs both metrics in parallel. See PVU explained and ILMT guide.

4. The named user inventory.

The SPSS named user gapThe SPSS user inventory tends to be small but durable. Once licensed to a named analyst the deployment persists for years even after the analyst moves on or stops using the tool. The audit reads the active SPSS install base, identifies the named user assignments, and produces an Authorized User shortfall when the active install count exceeds the licensed entitlement. The remediation is the periodic install retirement on the desktop fleet.

The buyer side discipline is the annual SPSS install audit. The desktop install record, the SPSS server connection log, and the licensed Authorized User entitlement are reconciled. The inactive installs are uninstalled. The entitlement is reallocated to the active analyst population. The work is two operational days per year on a mid sized estate.

5. SPSS and Cloud Pak for Data.

SPSS Modeler is included in Cloud Pak for Data. A buyer with both a standalone SPSS Modeler entitlement and a Cloud Pak for Data deployment is consuming entitlement from both. The reconciliation at renewal is the bundling calculus. See Cloud Pak strategy and the Cloud Pak Licensing Guide.

6. Audit posture on SPSS.

SPSS in an audit is reconciled on three axes. The edition deployed against the licensed edition (the module gap). The named user inventory against the Authorized User entitlement. The Server tier deployment against the PVU entitlement. The auditor reads the SPSS install records, the SPSS server connection logs, and the ILMT Audit Snapshot. The buyer side defence is the prepared evidence package on all three. See audit defense playbook and audit defense service.
